Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art to Exhibit Dramatic Rosenquist at Art Basel Miami Beach 2014
Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art will exhibit a monumental work by the American Pop artist James Rosenquist as the centerpiece of its stand at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach fair (December 5-8, 2014). Television or the Cat's Cradle Supports Electronic Picture, 1988-89 is a more than 5 by 20 foot (167.6 x 609.6 cm) example of the artist’s vivid canvases.
The richly painted work is interlaced with figure, flora and celestial imagery that tantalize the viewer with its complexity. Combining images that reference Rosenquist’s renowned earlier series Flowers and Faces, the juxtaposed forms collide evoking a sublime if not surreal landscape. The spliced woman’s face bursts through the surface of the canvas revealing wide-open eyes and hints of flesh. Flowers, Fish, and Females for the Four Seasons, 1984 (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY) also makes use of the splicing technique of intersecting representations. In both paintings the underlying imagery exposes a bounty of richness offered by nature.
According to Nahem “The painting captures the vitality of Rosenquist’s works of the late 1980s and early 90s expanding on his explorations of themes of light, space, and relativity. The sheer physical scale of this painting envelops the viewer and places him within a panoramic space that incorporates themes that are consistent throughout the artist’s oeuvre.”
In addition to the monumental Rosenquist painting, the gallery will exhibit a large-scale, long-unseen painting by Keith Haring with a graphic composition of red and black interlocking figures. Also on view will be two exceptional Ed Ruscha works including one from the Grand Horizontals series. The Nineties, 1980, is a rare and important example of this body of work that reflects the impact of wide-screen panorama and CinemaScope formats.
Paintings by Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Erik Benson, and three works by Roy Lichtenstein will also be exhibited. Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art will be located at Hall A at Booth #H06.
